Rumour has it that owners of messy spaces have messy minds, but we know that those with messy spaces are the creative types, the artists, the inventors. Equally, we have some pretty ship-shape desks in the studio, ones that would impress Marie Kondo (if you don’t know who she is, you should), whose owners are creators, thinkers and do-ers. We’ve done some digging to see what the average STM desk décor looks like – from the neat freaks to the hoarders, we wouldn’t have it any other way.
The Minimalists
Love a routine and a post-it note? Around 67% of us would class ourselves as minimalists and can be identified by the exact positioning of our desk essentials – of which there are few. The neat freaks among us (Andy O and Lauren to name a couple) have a place for everything and everything is always in its place. This expands to their desktop which often hosts minimal tabs in one orderly window. These off-the-chart organisation skills make them a (tidy) bunch of the hardworking, reliable and result-focused team members.
The Personalisers
In turns out, only 33% go that extra mile to give their desks some extra TLC. With favourite mugs, at least two plants and family pictures as her screensaver, Laura D certainly has the most stylish and loveable desk here. From highlighters to hot water bottles, she also has a never-ending drawer of everything. According to research, those that inject their personality into their desks are often extroverted, open, curious and intellectual, and we can’t argue with that!
The Organised Clutterers
There are always those desks in the office that are known for hosting piles of notes, printouts, stationery, cables and all the rest. These people are the out-of-the-box thinkers, the extroverts and often the friendliest. While our desks may be overtaken with swarms of sticky notes (36% of the team say they scribble notes on scrap paper) and look disorganised, Matt and Jo, in particular, have a mental system and know exactly where everything is, you just need to know where to look.
The Inbetweeners
We’re a diverse bunch, so had to create a fourth category for some of the team that like to play by their own rules – and why not!? The inbetweeners among us will have a tidy desk on one day with all their belongings in order, and the next will be drinking from 4 mugs and surrounded by documents – but hey, that’s business baby. They are often the most sociable, productive and best stashers of snacks – check our drawers because 54% of us said we store them out of sight.
Variety is the spice of life after all. What does your desk say about you? Tweet us at @stmcreates to let us know!
